Health Care Boston - Boston Takes Care Of Its Own.

Health Care in Boston is the home of some of the most advanced health care institutions in the world and with a ratio of 500 doctors per 100,000 people, there are few other places in the US that can boast of having more doctors than Boston. Well known as being the home of Harvard which produces many of the best doctors in the world, it is also home to Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital, Children's Hospital, New England Deaconess Hospital, the New England Medical Center and Boston Medical Center.

Massachusetts General was the first hospital to use anesthetic and to reattach a severed human limb. Then working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Shriners Burn Institute Massachusetts General was a pioneer the development of artificial skin. Brigham & Women's Hospital gained national recognition for its testing of the birth control pill. Along with the many fine hospitals, renowned medical schools, Boston is also home to a Comprehensive Cancer Treatment Center, cardiac rehabilitation centers and hospices for the critically ill, all operating within the city.

What is little known about Boston health care, is that it has a commitment to promoting a healthy lifestyle for all its residents.by helping improve access to prescription drugs and addressing health disparities that effect the poorest of Boston residents by forming a Blue Ribbon Task Force to Eliminate Racial and Ethnic Disparities. This Task Force is comprised of leaders from the health care industry, academic institutions, and community coalitions.

In addition, in partnership with the Boston Public Health Commission, Boston has tackled head on the challenging public health issues facing most cities, such as childhood obesity, asthma, diabetes, and cancer. And Boston’s Crusade Against Cancer program has become a working model for other communities to follow.

Of course no discussion of health care in Boston would be complete without mentioning the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP), which last year delivered services to more than 9,000 homeless men, women, and children. Funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trust, it has evolved as the largest and most comprehensive health care for the homeless program in the country.

With an eye towards 2008, BHCHP has begun the massive renovation of an old South End building, which will finally give a home base for the program. Until then BHCHP continues to provide for the homeless in Shelter-based and hospital-based clinics, a racetrack clinic, and Street and family outreach services.

With all that Boston Health Care programs available that provide for the well being of the people of Boston, one can conclude that the city residents are in good hands. What is particularly impressive is how those 'good hands' reach across to all socio-economic groups.
